San Francisco, CA – SFFILM has announced the lineup of programs to take place this fall as part of its year-round offerings, featuring several series presenting the new work of influential filmmakers along with films by emerging international talents in both the fiction and documentary world. Hong Kong Cinema will kick off the season with its exploration of new work from one of the world’s most important filmmaking hubs, followed by the seventh edition of Modern Cinema—SFFILM’s partnership with SFMOMA that explores the dynamic forces interacting between cinema’s past and present—and the highly anticipated Doc Stories, spotlighting the best in this year’s nonfiction storytelling with an eye to the awards season conversation.
Along with these series, SFFILM will present several events including Bay Area premieres of some of the most noteworthy award contenders, with star-studded red carpet events and exclusive offerings for film lovers of all tastes. After a widely successful move to the fall calendar in 2017, SFFILM Awards Night (formerly Film Society Awards Night), returns to December in 2018. One of the city’s most highly anticipated film events and social gatherings, this storied awards presentation and dinner will leverage the Bay Area’s increasing awards season relevance and recognize some of the best and brightest in contemporary cinema with special onstage tributes.

Hong Kong Cinema
September 28–30 Vogue Theatre
Now in its eighth year, this series of recent works from one of the most exciting eastern filmmaking centers will renews its tradition of offering a wild mix of genres with contributions from both internationally known masters and up-and-coming filmmaking talents along with iconic performances from some of the region’s biggest stars.
Modern Cinema – Satyajit Ray: Intimate Universes
October 4–21 SFMOMA Phyllis Wattis Theater
A co-presentation of SFFILM and SFMOMA, Modern Cinema is comprised of three seasons annually, each built around a unique theme to highlight the ongoing dialogue between the critically acclaimed filmmakers of today and the great masters of cinema’s past.
Season seven will focus on multitalented master storyteller Satyajit Ray. Widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the twentieth-century, Ray’s delicate human dramas often express contemporary issues of Indian life ranging from in-depth portraits of women, to historical epics, detective stories, and more. This season will present some of his best-known works along with the films that inspired him, and those inspired by him.
Doc Stories
November 1–4 SFMOMA Phyllis Wattis Theater
2018 marks the fourth anniversary of this audience favorite. Highly anticipated on the regional and national level, this series celebrates the year’s most noteworthy nonfiction works that will undoubtedly define the awards season conversation. With numerous filmmakers in attendance, audiences will get a chance to engage with critical contemporary issues through in-depth conversations with some of today’s most talented nonfiction storytellers.
SFFILM Awards Night
December 3 Palace of Fine Arts Exhibition Center
SFFILM’s annual benefit gala celebration of the craft of cinema will return to its new position in the city’s fall calendar, adding a Bay Area voice to the end-of-year awards season conversation. Throughout the years, SFFILM honorees have included Robert Altman, Kathryn Bigelow, Ellen Burstyn, Frances Ford Coppola, Judy Davis, Guillermo del Toro, Harrison Ford, Richard Gere, Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani, Abbas Kiarostami, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Mira Nair, James Schamus, Robin Williams, and Kate Winslet, among many others.
