San Francisco, CA — The San Francisco Film Society has announced that it will welcome acclaimed comedy filmmaker Christopher Guest to present his latest feature Mascots, Tuesday October 4, 7:00 pm at the Castro Theatre. An onstage conversation with Guest will follow a sneak preview of the new film, ahead of its premiere on Netflix on October 13.
“It’s going to be an immense pleasure to welcome Christopher Guest to San Francisco to share this hilarious film,” said SF Film Society Executive Director Noah Cowan. “He has brought us yet another masterful exploration of a world of wonderful weirdos, and I can’t wait for our audiences to have this early opportunity to see it and learn more about the creative process behind the magic that happens onscreen.”
All the world’s a stage in the films of Christopher Guest, and all the players just want to be loved, to be accepted—and to win! Guest’s semi-improvised films consistently champion the underdogs. (And, in the case of the magnificent Best in Show, actual dogs.) With this latest film, the director and his extended family of gifted collaborators usher us into the milieu of professional mascots, those energetic individuals who bravely don ridiculous oversized costumes to excite sports fans and cheer on their team with slapstick antics. Chronicling the competition for the World Mascot Association’s Gold Fluffy Award, Mascots is an inspired showcase for the comic genius of Guest and company.
The cast includes numerous beloved actors familiar from previous Guest films: Parker Posey, Jane Lynch, Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Begley, Jr., John Michael Higgins, Bob Balaban, and Fred Willard. Mascots also welcomes new members to the fold, including Chris O’Dowd and Zach Woods. Every performance is, like the film as a whole, hilarious, bizarre, and big-hearted.
