San Francisco, CA — The San Francisco Film Society has announced that it will welcome several key cast and crew members of the episodic phenomenon Transparent for an in-depth onstage discussion of their work on the hit show followed by a screening of the first three episodes of the upcoming third season, Wednesday September 21, 7:30 pm at the Castro Theatre. Special guests expected to attend include series writer Our Lady J and cast members Jay Duplass and Trace Lysette, with additional guests to be announced. Transparent‘s third season will be released on Amazon Prime on September 23.
“Transparent has provided us with that special kind of cultural moment that only comes along once in a generation,” said SF Film Society Executive Director Noah Cowan. “It is an incredibly entertaining and perfectly conceived series that makes an outsized impact on the social evolution of our country. We feel blessed to be able to bring its new season to what will surely be a rapturous Bay Area audience celebrating our shared values with these amazing creators and cast.”
Jill Soloway’s groundbreaking series has brought us the Pfeffermans—a Jewish LA family whose lives suddenly change when patriarch Mort (Jeffrey Tambor) comes out as transgender. Both moving and culturally incisive, Transparent is also full of joy and sharp wit. The show leaps between humor and tenderness, relating a deeply personal trans experience while telling the stories of parents with grown children and adults who re-open questions of sexuality.
At the start of the third season, Maura (Jeffery Tambor) begins volunteering at an LGBTQ suicide hotline, and, after a jarring reality check, starts to contemplate gender confirmation surgery. Shelly (Judith Light), Maura’s ex-wife, embraces a new relationship and resolves to open up about her side of things. Their children, meanwhile, continue on own their own journeys of self-discovery. Josh (Jay Duplass) is on the up in the Los Angeles music scene, but he still struggles to cope with his breakup with Rabbi Raquel (Kathryn Hahn). Sarah (Amy Landecker) strives for spiritual guidance in the wake of her divorce from Len (Rob Huebel) and her abruptly called-off wedding with Tammy (Melora Hardin). And Ali (Gaby Hoffman) begins to question her career path and her relationship with Leslie (Cherry Jones), her grad school professor.
With remarkable performances and amazing writing, it is no wonder that Transparent has become an episodic phenomenon. The show took home five Emmys after its premiere season and is up for six more this year. With great excitement, the Film Society is proud to help kick off the next chapter in this hit series.
Tickets to An Evening with the Creators and Cast of Transparent are $20 for SFFS members, $25 general and $150 VIP (which includes access to a pre-program reception and reserved seating at the screening). Box office now open online at sffs.org.
