The San Francisco Film Society announces a new master class with Les Blank, the documentary director, producer and cinematographer best known for films focused on American-based musicians, artists, filmmakers and local characters, 1:00 pm, Friday, August 24 at Futures Without Violence (100 Montgomery Street, in the Presidio).
Legendary documentary filmmaker Blank, whose film credits include The Blues Accordin’ to Lightnin’ Hopkins (1968), Always For Pleasure (1978), Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers (1980), Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (1980), Burden of Dreams (1982) and In Heaven There Is No Beer? (1984), will lead an intimate in-depth discussion on the art of documentary cinematography and visual storytelling.

Always for Pleasure: The Films of Les Blank, a ten program retrospective, runs July 8-August 30 at the Pacific Film Archive Theater in Berkeley. Blank’s beautiful, roaming camerawork will be the subject of a Behind the Scenes lecture on Saturday, August 25, and on Thursday, August 30, Blank’s longtime collaborator Maureen Gosling will share her insights into documentary sound and editing. Previous Behind the Scenes participants have included editor Curtiss Clayton, costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis, composer Mark Isham, animator John Musker, art director Patricia Woodbridge, special effects creator Phil Tippett and producer Sid Ganis.
Behind the Scenes: The Art and Craft of Cinema is presented in partnership with UC Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive with major support provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.
