FEATURE FILMS ADDED JANUARY 1
The Amazing Catfish
Claudia Sainte-Luce, Mexico 2013, 89 min.
Set in Guadalajara, The Amazing Catfish follows the quiet transformation of a solitary young woman informally adopted and absorbed into a rambunctious matriarchy in a state of crisis. Filmed by Claire Denis’ long-time cinematographer Agnès Godard, Claudia Sainte-Luce’s debut feature, based loosely on events from her own life, embraces the inclination to define a family as the people you choose and are chosen by, not necessarily the ones you’re born to. Official selection of the 2014 SFFILM Festival.
Cemetery of Splendor
Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand/UK/France/Germany/Malaysia 2015, 122 min.
Soldiers with a mysterious sleeping sickness are transferred to a temporary clinic in a former school. The memory-filled space becomes a revelatory world for housewife and volunteer Jenjira, as she watches over Itt, a handsome soldier with no family visitors. There may be a connection between the soldiers’ enigmatic syndrome and the mythic ancient site that lies beneath the clinic. Magic, healing, romance and dreams are all part of Jen’s tender path to a deeper awareness of herself and the world around her. Official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Chevalier
Athina Rachel Tsangari, Greece 2015, 104 min.
A slow-burn satire dubbed “a buddy movie without the buddies,” Chevalier brilliantly mines the comedy of the modern male competitive spirit. Six well-to-do Greek men on a sailing vacation devise increasingly extreme competitions to determine, definitively, which of them is “the best in general.” No women are present to interfere; only the yacht’s small crew will witness the proceedings. Egos will be bruised, blood will be spilled, manhood will be…measured. Are you man enough for Chevalier? Official selection of the 2016 SFFILM Festival.
Tyrannosaur
Paddy Considine, UK 2011, 91 min.
Winner of the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer award at the BAFTA Awards, Tyrannosaur follows the story of two lonely, damaged people brought together by circumstance. Joseph (Peter Mullan) is an unemployed widower, drinker, and a man crippled by his own volatile temperament and furious anger. Hannah (Olivia Colman) is a Christian worker at a charity shop—a respectable woman who appears wholesome and happy. When the pair is brought together, Hannah appears as Joseph’s potential savior, someone who can temper his fury and offer him warmth, kindness and acceptance. Over time, Hannah’s own secrets are revealed, and as events spiral out of control, Joseph becomes her source of succor and comfort.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
Apichatpong Weerasethakul, UK/Thailand/France/Germany/Spain 2010, 113 min.
Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is a unique tale of a man embracing life’s greatest mystery. Suffering from acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee has chosen to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside. Surprisingly, the ghost of his deceased wife appears and cares for him, and his long lost son returns home in a non-human form. Contemplating the reasons for his illness, Boonmee treks through the jungle with his family to a mysterious hilltop cave-the birthplace of his first life.
