Workshop for Kids: Creative Poetry + Film

Description

Bring a poem to life with Pushcart Prize nominee Nancy Kangas, using illustration and poetry to unlock the depth and complexity of creative expression. How does creating art help young people explore the wonderful wilderness of their feelings and ideas? Where do we find ideas to make art? These questions and more are explored in this master class.

Struck by how clearly kids write about what they love and fear, Kangas and co-director Josh Kun asked award-winning international artists to animate poems written by preschool-aged children, resulting in films fueled by the inner worlds of young people today. Following the same exercises used to generate and inspire the young minds in Preschool Poets (2017), participants will have a chance to blossom into poets through this hands-on workshop. Led by experienced teaching artist Kangas, students will play a poetry game, inspire each other, and celebrate the creative process by crafting their own poems. Then students will get a chance to visualize their stanzas through illustration, and see their poem brought to life.

This is a drop-off class for kids aged 6–10, but parents are welcome to stay.
