Description
Gay Talese’s book The Voyeur’s Motel was a long-researched single-source portrait of Gerald Foos, the now infamous owner of the Manor House Motel which he designed and used for the secret observation of its guests and their sexual activities. Talese, who had forged through similar ethical gray areas while reporting his study of American post-war sexuality, Thy Neighbor’s Wife, spent years researching the story and experienced Foos’s clandestine observation post firsthand. Filmmakers Myles Kane and Josh Koury were filming as the story developed, giving them unprecedented access to both Talese and Foos. When questions arose about timelines and Foos’s general reliability, the subsequent controversy and the media attention that the book’s salacious subject matter elicited created tensions that even the filmmakers couldn’t escape. The resulting film is a fascinating dissection of the relationship between subject and author, and between the watcher and the watched.
Myles Kane has collaborated with Josh Koury as co-director on Journey to Planet X (2012) and as editor on We Are Wizards (2008). In 2015, the two directed An Immortal Man, about baseball great Ted Williams, for ESPN’s 30 for 30 series. He also directed two episodes of Shorts and Murmurs for the New Yorker‘s website.
Josh Koury was born and raised in upstate New York and is a co-founder of the Brooklyn Underground Film Festival where he served as programming director for five years. His documentary films include Journey to Planet X (2012), We Are Wizards (2008), and Standing by Yourself (2002).
