Description

Join us for an evening of stories about objects in films from writers, artists, filmmakers and actors.

Have you ever been distracted by a detail that catches your attention in a movie? Become entranced by a costume or a set? Or just fallen in love with a gadget or imaginative futuristic architecture? Our guests for this special festival presentation have gone beyond distraction to fascination with unsung objects of the cinema.

Presenters will include:

Anthony Discenza
Anthony Discenza spends much of his time thinking and worrying about an extensive variety of subjects. Occasionally, this activity results in the production of tangible objects, physical environments, and/or text-based materials intended for public presentation. Currently, Discenza can be found in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he resides and works.

Anna Rose Holmer
A participant in the Sundance Institute Editing Intensive Fellowship and selected for the Venice Biennale College with The Fits, Anna Rose Holmer was named one of Filmmaker Magazine‘s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2015. She’s also produced Ballet 422 with Jody Lee Lipes, Salero (SFIFF 2016) with Mike Plunkett and co-directed/produced A Ballet in Sneakers: Jerome Robbins and Opus Jazz with Matt Wolf. Her first documentary feature, Twelve Ways to Sunday, was chosen for IFP’s Documentary Filmmaker Lab.

Elizabeth Ito
Elizabeth Ito was born, raised and still lives in Los Angeles. She graduated from UCLA, then Cal Arts, and currently works in Hollywood! Or, more accurately, she works in Burbank, CA. Elizabeth has mostly worked as a storyboard artist for both television and feature films at various studios. You can totally Google her and check out her IMDB page for details. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her husband, Kevin, and her son, Newton. One piece of trivia you won’t find on the internet: Elizabeth is allergic to cats, and her favorite food is soba. She is currently a supervising director at Cartoon Network on Adventure Time and is showing off her cool new short, Welcome to My Life, at various festivals around the world.

Starlee Kine
Starlee Kine is the host of the podcast Mystery Show. She’s also a contributor to This American Life, where she once wrote a break-up song with the help of Phil Collins.

DJ Real
Nick Stargu is a musician, comedian and writer who is best known for his musical comedy act, DJ Real, which has been featured at Outside Lands, San Francisco Sketchfest, Bridgetown Comedy Fest and more! He most recently appeared on the TV show Flophouse on Viceland. And he’s opened for Devo! Nick also performs as Imaginary Radio with comedy partner Drennon Davis. They have performed at SXSW, SF Sketchfest and the Funny or Die Oddball Festival.

Kate Rhoades
Kate Rhoades is an interdisciplinary artist. Influenced by a background in comic books and YouTube videos, Rhoades uses paint, publications and digital media to probe the absurdity of the art world in all its social and institutional facets. She received a BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design and an MFA from Mills College. Her work has been exhibited in art venues, alleys and hotel rooms across the United States and Canada.

Scott Vermeire
A California entrepreneur and performance artist, Scott Vermeire conceives and creates solo as well as with collaborative groups Sad Vicious and Wonderment Consortium.  His success has led him to work with creatives like David Shrigley, Steve Lambert and Old Man Gloom as well as companies like Hormel, Schweppes and The San Jose County Clerk Recorder’s Office.  He has exhibited at venues including SFMOMA, Southern Exposure, di Rosa and Porchlight.  His work has been featured in The Washington Post, The Onion, KQED, KTVU and Art Practical.  Scott describes himself as equal parts handsome, charming and humble.

Press from their projects has appeared in the New York Times, Frieze, KQED and Artforum, among others. Founded in 2007 by artists Will Rogan and Jonn Herschend, THE THING Quarterly works with artists, writers, musicians, designers and filmmakers to publish objects. It’s like a periodical, except that it can be put to use.
