Description

With a generosity of spirit and an eye for nuance, Andrew Bujalski’s unconventional comedy circles around various characters associated with a Texas gym called Power 4 Life. Trevor (Guy Pearce), the owner and founder, has a very particular philosophy that undergirds his gym and his passion for healthful living and is hoping to expand his business to match his holistic outlook. The trouble is that this worldview hasn’t helped him in the romance department with one of his trainers, the hardcore and high-strung Kat (Cobie Smulders, also in Unexpected), who is always ready for a quick run when trouble arises. Matters are complicated further when a wealthy, recently divorced and overweight new client named Danny (Kevin Corrigan in one of his best performances) approaches Trevor for some at-home workout assistance from Kat, and the film amusingly depicts the interesting and unexpected ways in which these flawed people carom off one another into new constellations of being. From clumsy attempts at seduction to stag nights at Danny’s spacious home to a hilarious visit to Trevor’s fitness guru played by an unrecognizable Anthony Michael Hall, Results gently prods and satirizes the foibles of its characters as they grapple with emotionally weighty matters that just can’t be tackled through sweaty workouts. —Rod Armstrong

Director Andrew Bujalski

A graduate of Harvard’s Department of Visual and Environmental Studies, Andrew Bujalski made his feature writing/directing debut with Funny Ha Ha (2002), which garnered an Independent Spirit Someone to Watch Award. His other films include Mutual Appreciation (2005), Beeswax (2009) and Computer Chess (SFIFF 2013). Of Results Bujalski says, “On this movie I was taking most of the ideas & philosophies I’d developed over the last 15 years of work and tossing them out, trying to play instead, more or less, ‘by the book.’ Of course I still made plenty of unconventional decisions and I suspect the movie is as idiosyncratic as anything I’ve done—but to even consult the damn ‘book’ at all was terrifying.”
