Description
In South Korean director Hong Sang-soo’s 15th film, he proves once again that he has perfected the subtle art of dry, acerbic and minimalist character studies. As usual, he plies his self-absorbed and neurotic filmmakers with soju and cigarettes until their real emotions rush forth and reveal what a mess they are in. Actress Jeong Yu-mi, in her fifth Hong film, stars as the odd, reserved and very pretty film student Sunhi, who mysteriously returns to campus after a long absence, seeking a letter of recommendation from her former professor (an amusing Kim Sang-joong). Over a series of wryly comic long-take scenes, Sunhi finds herself in an unwanted love quadrangle with him, a classmate and her ex-boyfriend, who recently used their failed relationship as fodder for his debut film. Each suitor rationalizes caustic opinions about her when she is perceived as distant and cold, and effusively glowing affectations when she is flirtatious and near at hand. The men are oblivious; never sure of their dream woman’s intentions. The only certainty in Hong’s charming satire is that it will take several more soju and cigarette sessions before the men can even begin to fathom the enigma of Sunhi. –Gustavus Kundahl
Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1960, director Hong Sang-soo has completed 15 films since his debut The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well (1996). A regular presence at international film festivals, Hong’s Hahaha (SFIFF 2011) won the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes, and Our Sunhi (2013) captured the Best Director prize at the Locarno Film Festival.
