Online Screening and Q&A: “Still Human” with Actor Crisel Consunji
Event Recording
Guests Expected
Actor Crisel Consunji is expected to participate in an online Q&A.
Description
The relationship between a paralyzed man and his Filipina caretaker develops with sensitivity and nuance in Oliver Chan’s debut film. Cheong-wing is a former construction worker who has let anger and bitterness estrange him from family members and society in general. His emotional state causes him to treat his new caregiver Evelyn with disdain and thinly veiled racism, but her undaunted cheer and professionalism eventually lead to respect and rapport between the two. Hong Kong superstar Anthony Wong shows the wounded humanity below Cheong-wing’s gruff surface while newcomer Crisel Cosunji brilliantly indicates the steely determination that underlies Evelyn’s pleasant surface. Along with a trio of Hong Kong Film Awards for Wong, Cosunji, and director Chan, Still Human was a winning project of Create Hong Kong’s First Feature Film Initiative.
“Chan excels at portraying the often precarious lives of overseas Filipino workers with compassion and insight, gracing them with the humanity and dignity they’re often denied in real life.” —Justin Lowe, The Hollywood Reporter

Oliver Chan studied business and finance, making short films on the side, when a part-time job for a screenwriters’ guild cemented her decision to get her degree in filmmaking. Reflecting on Still Human, she says, “People under any circumstances, facing any challenges, at any point in life are entitled to the good things: harboring dreams, good relationships, love. No one has a right to look down on anyone who is different, and who has hidden dreams — big or small.”
