The Nowhere Inn
Description
Notions of public image and private persona collide in this funny subversion of the concert documentary. Wanting to capture footage from her Fear the Future tour, Annie Clark (better known as St. Vincent) offers best pal and Portlandia co-creator Carrie Brownstein the job. “I want to disrupt the senses,” Clark tells her, but they amusingly diverge on how to go about it. Through their increasingly passive-aggressive behavior with one another, the film explores both performers’ interest in the notion of the narcissistic performer versus the authentic self.
“The Nowhere Inn ultimately becomes a vessel for St. Vincent’s slippery persona that only adds to its intrigue. In the process of poking at the neurotic discomfort of revealing the person behind the art, Clark and Brownstein have crafted a shrewd celebration of exactly that.” –Eric Kohn, IndieWire

After getting his start as an editor, Bill Benz has directed extensively for television, including the TV movies The Adult Swim Golf Classic (2016) and Mr. Neighbor’s House (2016), and the series Kroll Show (2013-2015), Portlandia (2011-2018), and At Home with Amy Sedaris (2017-). The Nowhere Inn is his first feature.
