Nine Months
Description
A year after his star-making performance in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hugh Grant sparkles in his first American leading role as a reluctant dad-to-be in Chris Columbus’s San Francisco-set romcom. Samuel (Grant) and girlfriend Rebecca (Julianne Moore) have been together for five years but her announcement that her birth control failed shocks him. Initially dismayed at the prospect of fatherhood, Samuel has those titular nine months to learn to embrace the idea. In a fizzy comedy blending screwball antics with sentimental moments, Moore is wonderful playing the straight woman to her exasperating partner. But this movie is Grant’s as he delivers a brilliant performance that emphasizes the actor’s charm (even when Samuel is being a pill) and his spectacular comic gifts. Adding to the laughs in support are Tom Arnold, Joan Cusack, Jeff Goldblum, and the Bay Area’s own Robin Williams, hilarious as a Russian obstetrician. —Pam Grady
