The Last Vermeer
Description
Considered to be the most successful art forger of all time, Dutch painter Han van Meegeren (Guy Pearce) perfected the strokes of Vermeer so convincingly that he sold a fake to a high-ranking Nazi soldier. When the war ends, he’s declared a criminal for selling “stolen” art. Based on a true story, Dan Friedkin’s directorial debut follows the investigation and trial of van Meegeren as he awaits the death penalty, building tension in the stressful race to save the artist’s life, grounded by a superb and persuasive performance by Pearce.
“Pearce knows how to charm an audience with the most restrained and understated technique … In [The Last Vermeer], he charms the audience without ever softening the character. That is as deft a seduction as the greatest swindle performed by a master con artist.” –Stephen Farber, The Hollywood Reporter
