Description
One of cinema’s most respected and influential publications is brought vividly to life in Kent Jones’s enjoyable and expertly constructed documentary that illuminates the careers of and the relationship between two of cinema’s masters, Alfred Hitchcock and François Truffaut. Truffaut’s book, one of the most important on film ever published, was compiled from an eight-day interview conducted at Universal Studios with the British director whose films at the time were more successful than respected. Jones and co-screenwriter Serge Toubiana use the audiotapes of this interview as an opportunity to create a wonderfully illustrated career appreciation of Hitchcock, including gorgeous clips from less-known works along with heralded masterpieces. Directors such as Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Olivier Assayas and Martin Scorsese testify to the influence of both Hitchcock’s movies and Truffaut’s book. Hitchcock’s remark that a good film consisted of “popular material treated with intelligence” perfectly describes this engrossing documentary; managing to capture and recreate the enthusiasm of the youthful Truffaut towards Hitchcock’s mastery, Hitchcock/Truffaut is essential viewing for any student or lover of great cinema.
