Description

Academy Award nominee, K.K. Barrett engages in a wide-ranging conversation covering his acclaimed career in production design on such films as Her (2013), Where the Wild Things Are (2009), I ♥ Huckabees (2004) and Lost in Translation (2003). Barrett’s wildly inventive approach to Spike Jonze’s surreal Being John Malkovich (1999) introduced his style to moviegoers. He’s worked on all of Jonze’s subsequent films and has collaborated with Sofia Coppola, Michel Gondry and David O. Russell, where he has created the visual styles of period pieces, puppet animatronics, quasi-sci-fi and understated dramas. Barrett, a painter, sculptor and musician (he is drummer of synthpunk band the Screamers), has also designed numerous iconic music videos, including Smashing Pumpkin’s “Tonight, Tonight” and Beck’s “The New Pollution.” He will be engaged in conversation by Derek Fagerstrom (managing editor Zoetrope: All-Story and co-creative director Pop-Up Magazine), where they will informally wrangle over film art, creative processes, inspirations and favorite moments in production design. –Sean Uyehara
