From Fact to Fiction (2023)

Learning about values and interconnectedness from ‘From Fact to Fiction’

 

This shorts program shows an eclectic range of stories that include discussing family values and dynamic relationships, advocating for what is fair, and not giving up on one’s dreams. Topics traverse youth activism in Hawai‘i, intergenerational family bonds with a sprinkle of magic, a spider with a lunar dream, and an eternal Indigenous tale. This collection features narrative, documentary, and animated films using rotoscope, cut out animation, and autobiography to create a delightful assortment of films. Used by teachers and families, this study guide compliments a curriculum in English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Art/Media.

The Art & Science of Lucasfilm: Working on the StageCraft Set

Learning about art, science, and technology with StageCraft from LucasFilm

 

First used in 2016, the groundbreaking technology used by ILM StageCraft and Lucasfilm provides a continuous pipeline from initial exploration, scouting, and art direction, traditional and technical previsualization, lighting, and of course, real-time production filming itself, with the innovative StageCraft LED volumes. This presentation and study guide marks the 15th year of SFFILM’s collaborative educational series with Lucasfilm, demonstrating the intersection of art, science, and technology in the entertainment industry, all while making connections to current STEAM curriculum.

1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed

Learning from multiracial children and discussing race through ‘1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed’

 

Through interview-vignettes centering on mixed or multiracial Bay Area children, 1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed director W. Kamau Bell pieces together a documentary teeming with the character and vitality of smart Bay Area kids and their loving families contending with what it means to grow up mixed today. Approachable and charming, this film revels in the everyday lives, stories, and on-film moments between family members contending with race and racism together. Used by teachers or families, this study guide compliments a curriculum in Language Arts and History subjects, specifically delving into American History, Government, and English Language & Composition. Central themes include civil rights, social-emotional learning, and storytelling.

What These Walls Won’t Hold + How We Get Free + Sol in the Garden

Exploring transformational stories of incarceration through filmmaking

 
These three films What These Walls Won’t Hold, How We Get Free, and Sol in the Garden tell the perspective of people affected by incarceration and the driving need for freedom and connection in and outside of prison walls. This study guide is intended to support educators in leading conversations with students about the justice system and positive transformation and offers activities centered around youth empowerment.
