Description

Please join SFFILM Makers for a filmmaker talk with the team behind Miss Juneteenth, writer/director Channing Godfrey Peoples and producer Neil Creque Williams (SFFILM Rainin and Westridge grantees), moderated by filmmaker Maya Perez (SFFILM Westridge grantee). This discussion will cover the creative storytelling process from script to screen, Juneteenth historical significance and current resonance, the film’s reception and impact, Sundance premiere, virtual release, and more. The film recently won the Louis Black “Lone Star” Award at SXSW 2020.

We are pleased to offer SFFILM members the opportunity to watch Miss Juneteenth for free — please register to receive more details.

About the film:
A poignant story of deferred dreams and a mother’s love, Miss Juneteenth tells the story of Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie), who pushes her daughter to compete in the titular African-American pageant that she herself won back in 2004. So intent on having her daughter fulfill the promise that she feels went unrealized in her own life, Turquoise loses sight of the fact that her child might have different goals. Firmly rooted in its Fort Worth, Texas, milieu, the film also presents one of the most believable mother-daughter relationships in recent years.

This event will be hosted by SFFILM’s Artist Development team, and is open to all SFFILM members. Not yet a member? Join today!
