SFFILM
San Francisco, CA – SFFILM announced today that celebrated filmmaker Spike Lee will be presented with a special tribute, including an in-depth onstage conversation about his career and creative process followed by a free screening of his latest film BlacKkKlansman, Tuesday, September 25, 7:00 pm at the Castro Theatre (429 Castro Street). With this special tribute on the occasion of his newest work, SFFILM welcomes Lee back to San Francisco and continues a rich history with the veteran filmmaker that includes the world premieres of She’s Gotta Have It and Crooklyn at the SFFILM Festival and the presentation of the Irving M. Levin Award for Film Direction to Lee in 2007.
“BlacKkKlansman has changed the conversation about race and resistance in this country,” said SFFILM Executive Director Noah Cowan. “We could not imagine a better tribute to help kick off our fall season of special screenings and events, and we expect a lively conversation that we hope will galvanize those appalled by the rise of white nationalism in this country into action.”
Spike Lee has created an iconic body of storytelling that has left an indelible mark on filmmaking and television. His career spans 30 years and includes She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, Clockers, Girl 6, Get on the Bus, He Got Game, Summer of Sam, Bamboozled, 25th Hour, She Hate Me, Inside Man, Miracle at St. Anna, Red Hook Summer, Old Boy, and Chi-Raq, among others. Lee’s outstanding feature documentary work includes the double Emmy Award®-winning If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise, a follow-up to his HBO documentary film When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts and the Peabody Award-winning A Huey P Newton Story. In the television arena, Lee is currently in pre-production on Season 2 of his Netflix Original Series She’s Gotta Have It, a contemporary update of the classic film.
About BlacKkKlansman:
From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, a time of great social upheaval as the struggle for civil rights rages on. Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) becomes the first African American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department, but his arrival is greeted with skepticism and open hostility by the department’s rank and file. Undaunted, Stallworth resolves to make a name for himself and a difference in his community. He bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.
Tickets to A Tribute to Spike Lee: BlacKkKlansman are $15 for SFFILM members, $20 for the general public. Tickets include access to the onstage conversation as well as the screening. Access to the screening alone is free of charge on a first come, first served basis. Box office is open now at sffilm.org.
