San Francisco, CA — SFFILM has announced the lineup of programs to take place this fall as part of its year-round offerings, featuring a bevy of film series presenting the new work of influential masters along with work from emerging international filmmakers in both the narrative and nonfiction world. Kicking off in late September with Hong Kong Cinema‘s exploration of exciting new films from one of the world’s most important filmmaking hubs, fall series will continue with a new edition of Modern Cinema—SFFILM’s partnership with SFMOMA that explores the dynamic forces interacting between cinema’s past and present—and culminate with the highly anticipated Doc Stories, spotlighting the best in this year’s nonfiction storytelling with an eye to the end-of-year award season.
In addition to these series, SFFILM will present several events including the highly anticipated Bay Area premieres of some of the most noteworthy award contenders, with star-studded red carpet events and exclusive offerings for movie lovers of all tastes.
In connection with these public screenings and events, SFFILM Education will host programs for young Bay Area students that will connect them with visiting and local filmmakers, artists, and film technicians to highlight media literacy, celebrate world citizenship, and explore the art and craft of contemporary cinema through filmmaker visits to classrooms, in-theater presentations, and more.
Finally, the previously announced historic 60th-anniversary edition of SFFILM Awards Night (formerly Film Society Awards Night), will take place on Tuesday, December 5, at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts Exhibition Center. One of the city’s most highly anticipated film events and social gatherings, this storied dinner event and awards presentation will leverage the Bay Area’s increasing awards season relevance and recognize the storied careers of some of the best and brightest in contemporary cinema with special onstage tributes.

SFMOMA Phyllis Wattis Theater
Comprised of three seasons annually, each built around a unique theme, this series seeks to highlight the ongoing dialogue between the critically acclaimed filmmakers of today and the great masters of cinema’s past, in an attempt to shine a light on the historical continuity and ongoing impact of this most modern of art forms. A co-presentation of SFFILM and SFMOMA, Modern Cinema will offer its audiences a special look into the medium with onstage programs featuring some of today’s most iconic figures in the filmmaking world.

Vogue Theatre
Now in its third edition, this highly anticipated series celebrates the year’s most noteworthy documentaries that will undoubtedly define the awards season conversation. With numerous filmmakers in attendance, audiences will get a chance to engage with critical contemporary issues through in-depth conversations with some of today’s most talented nonfiction storytellers.

Now in its 60th-anniversary edition, SFFILM’s annual benefit gala celebrating the craft of cinema—until now always presented during April’s San Francisco International Film Festival—finds a new position in the city’s fall calendar, adding a Bay Area voice to the end-of-year awards season conversation. SFFILM honorees throughout the years have included Robert Altman, Ellen Burstyn, Frances Ford Coppola, Judy Davis, Guillermo del Toro, Harrison Ford, Richard Gere, Abbas Kiarostami, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Tom McCarthy, Mira Nair, Sean Penn, Eric Roth, James Schamus, Kevin Spacey, and Robin Williams, among many others.
SFFILM Education: The Art & Science of Lucasfilm

This collaborative educational series celebrates Industrial Light & Magic’s awe-inspiring work by focusing on a specific aspect of the development and production of one of its most recent features films with behind-the-scenes interactive multimedia presentations featuring special guests from the ILM creative teams, exclusively for Bay Area middle- and high-school students.
