The 53rd San Francisco International Film Festival (April 22-May 6) will open with Micmacs (France 2009), the latest film from Academy Award-nominated director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Micmacs will screen 7:00 pm, Thursday, April 22 at the historic Castro Theatre. The Opening Night party will begin at 9:30 pm at the Regency Center.
The latest whimsical creation from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet-the endlessly inventive mind behind Delicatessen, Amélie and The City of Lost Children-is a David-and-Goliath story that employs humor and a deceptively buoyant tone to confront a corporate mentality that has no qualms about selling mayhem and death. Both Tetsuo Nagata’s cinematography and Aline Bonetto’s production design ensure that the film is a visual stunner. As romantic in its own way as Amélie, if more serious in intent, Jeunet’s first film in five years is sure to dazzle Opening Night attendees.
“Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s latest film is charmingly puckish and vibrant,” said Graham Leggat, executive director of the San Francisco Film Society. “Its spirited hijinks and masterful artistry make Micmacs a glorious film to kick off our 53rd Festival. I’ve no doubt everyone who sees it will go away happy and hungry for more such wonderful filmgoing experiences over the course of the Festival.”
The celebration continues at the Opening Night party on two levels of Edwardian splendor at the historic Regency Center and features live music, cool cocktails and international culinary delights.
Admission for the Opening Night film and party is $70 for SFFS members and $85 general admission; VIP tickets are $145.
Micmacs is presented in association with the French Consulate, San Francisco and the French-American Cultural Society, San Francisco.
