SFIFF53 Announces a Thrilling Lineup of Late Show Features

Mar 30, 2010

Artist Development

The 53rd San Francisco International Film Festival (April 22-May 6) has announced its annual Late Show section, a survey of the best in international thrills and chills. This year’s program offers the science-fiction dazzler Cargo, the increasingly blood-laden The Violent Kind, an array of hilariously gruesome antics in All About Evil and an imaginatively sadistic teenager in The Loved Ones.

“This year’s Late Shows, a thrilling quartet of films worth staying up for, are geared to the tastes of Festival audiences yearning for a visually stunning late night experience,” said Rod Armstrong, programmer for the San Francisco Film Society.

All About Evil, Joshua Grannell (USA 2009) World Premiere
This screening includes a spectacular live pre-show featuring Peaches Christ and numerous other special guests. A meek librarian turns sanguinary filmmaker after inheriting an old movie palace in this hilarious tribute to ’80s slasher films by Bay Area impresario Joshua Grannell-aka Peaches Christ.

Cargo, Ivan Engler and Ralph Etter (Switzerland 2009)
A doctor signs on to a cargo freighter, little knowing what the ship is actually carrying in this suspenseful, stylish and atmospheric effort-Switzerland’s first sci-fi film-that potently combines environmental concerns with outer space chills.

The Loved Ones, Sean Byrne (Australia 2009)
As if the death of his father and subsequent catatonia of his mother weren’t enough, a grieving teen is pursued by the ugly duckling from hell in this gripping shocker from Australia.

The Violent Kind, The Butcher Brothers (USA 2010)
On the hottest day of the year, a quartet of friends heads up to a rural cabin for a birthday party little knowing what horrific circumstances await them-and intrepid audiences-courtesy of the imaginatively macabre Butcher Brothers.
