Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner, West Side Story tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort; Rachel Zegler; Ariana DeBose; David Alvarez; Mike Faist; Josh Andrés Rivera; Ana Isabelle; Corey Stoll; Brian d’Arcy James; and Rita Moreno. From 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company will release West Side Story in U.S. theaters on December 10, 2021.
This special event, hosted by SFFILM Education under its Family Programming initiative, is free and open to the public. We’re excited to welcome back in-person screenings to help us celebrate SFFILM Education’s 30th Anniversary. Advance RSVP is required.

Your safety is our top priority. Masks must be worn inside all SFFILM Festival venues. When at a screening, masks may only be removed when actively eating or drinking once seated (masks must be worn in theater lobbies and restrooms). We are monitoring city public health guidelines and recommendations regarding COVID-19 and may update safety protocols as needed leading up to the screening.
We require proof of “up-to-date” vaccination and a photo ID at the door.
- For patrons under 5 Proof of a negative test taken 48 hours in advance allows admission to this event.
- For patrons 5-11 “up-to-date” means completely both initial dosages of the Pfizer vaccine.
For patrons 12-17 “up-to-date” means receiving a third dose of Pfizer 6 months after completing the initial series of vaccines. - For patrons 17 and over “up-to-date” means receiving a booster 5 months after completing the initial doses of Pfizer or Moderna or 2 months after receiving the Johnson and Johnson dose.
Photo ID not required for children ages 5 through 12.

Rita Moreno has won all four of the most prestigious awards in show business: an Oscar, a Tony, two Emmys, and a Grammy. Her countless credits span more than seven decades, beginning with her Broadway debut at age 13. Moreno has starred on Broadway and London’s West End, appeared in more than 40 feature films, and countless television shows, and has performed in numerous regional theaters including her one woman show, Life Without Makeup at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
Most recently, Moreno co-starred in the critically acclaimed Latinx reimagining of Norman Lear’s classic sitcom, One Day At A Time. Her documentary Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It, for American Masters Pictures had its world debut at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film was released theatrically in over 220 theaters nationwide and will have its international release this winter. The film had its TV debut on PBS and is now available to stream on Netflix.
Moreno co-stars and is an Executive Producer of the Steven Spielberg remake of West Side Story, scheduled for December 2021 release.
