Weeds on Fire
Description
Inspired by the true story of Hong Kong’s first youth league baseball team, this winning sports comedy offers rousing entertainment for fans of underdog stories. It’s 1984, and the middle-school kids of Shatin (part of Hong Kong’s New Territories) lack the means and resources of their big-city neighbors. Their school principal, Mr. Lo, hopes that forming a baseball team (the Martins) might help some of the boys overcome their insecurities and give them respite from their dispiriting surroundings. Two of the key players, Wei and Lung, have been best friends for many years, and are selected to be pitcher and catcher. But just as the Martins begin winning games, the two pals are confronted with personal issues that lead to upheaval at home and on the field. Made for only $250,000, Weeds on Fire has an independent spirit that successfully blends a touching depiction of how close friends can grow apart with a buoyant tale of scrappy kids who find glory and meaning in the ballpark.
