Description

A hunting trip meant as a rite of passage and to bridge a growing divide between a divorced dad and his young teenage son takes a dangerous turn under wintry conditions in the Montana mountains in this suspenseful, resonant drama. Like every other urban adolescent, David (Josh Wiggins, Hellion, Festival 2014) is attached to his smartphone and video games. Visiting Cal (Matt Bomer) in his rural, isolated cabin and hiking into the mountains is like venturing into a foreign country. But as man and boy set about tracking their prey and snow unexpectedly falls, David begins to get caught up in the adventure until circumstances bring his relationship with his father into sharp relief. Bomer, a Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee for his role as an AIDS-stricken journalist in A Normal Heart (2014), brings emotional depth and poignancy to Cal, while Wiggins is exquisite as a boy on the cusp of maturity. Montana’s big sky and snow-capped peaks provide a breathtaking backdrop to Alex and Andrew Smith’s haunting adaptation of David Quammen’s short story, a thrilling, deceptively simple tale that packs an emotional wallop. –Pam Grady
