

Visual Storytelling Workshop with Alicia K. Harris
Description
Join Alicia K. Harris, award-winning filmmaker, director, and producer for a visual storytelling workshop for teens. Known for her poetic, expressive style and work celebrating the Black experience, Alicia will lead students through the various visual components that encompass a film, from cinematography to production and costume design. Students will learn how to convey emotion through imagery and storyboarding exercises as well as how a director goes from script to screen. The filmmaker will also screen her short film On a Sunday at Eleven and give a presentation on her career in the film and television industry. Students will have the chance to ask the director about her career or for advice about getting started in the film industry!—Soph Schultz Rocha

This workshop runs for two hours and is open to students ages 13–18; space is limited. This workshop is for students only; parents and guardians may drop off their students.

Alicia K. Harris is a filmmaker from Toronto, Canada. Her Oscar-qualified short film PICK, won Best Live Action Short at the 2020 Canadian Screen Awards and Best Short Film at the 2020 Miami Film Festival. Her latest film, On a Sunday at Eleven, premiered at TIFF 2024, and the 2025 Berlinale. Notably, she was the main director and co-executive producer of the recent Amazon Prime Black cowboy series, Beyond Black Beauty, and the director of the official Gloria Gaynor biopic I Will Survive. Alicia is known for her poetic visual style and is dedicated to celebrating the Black experience in her work, with a focus on authenticity, beauty, and spirituality.
