To the Fore
Description
Dante Lam’s latest film is an epic sports drama that captures the visceral intensity, speed and tactics of world-class competitive cycling. Composed of a cast of current teen idols, the film centers on three cyclists: Ji-won (Choi Si-won), Ming (Eddie Peng) and Tian (Shawn Dou). All three are attempting to establish themselves as professional cyclists within their team, and each brings a different skill set of speed, endurance, strategic brilliance and psychological strength. Before the end, each of the competitors will need to reckon with themselves, making tough choices between team loyalty and self-promotion. Best known for his action films, Lam’s meticulous work with choreography shines through in the stunning cycling sequences where suspenseful schemes and maneuvers are arrestingly detailed. With twists and turns both literal and figurative, To the Fore spins an exciting story about the rivalries, friendships and moral hazards that accompany pedaling one’s way to the top.
In the late 1980s Dante Lam served as assistant director for Gordon Chan on films with major stars Stephen Chow, Jackie Chan and Andy Lau. He co-directed Beast Cops (1998) with Chan, which won Best Film and Director awards at the Hong Kong Film Festival in 1999. Since then Lam has directed nearly 20 films in the action and thriller genres including the critically acclaimed Jiang Hu: The Triad Zone (2000), Beast Stalker (SFIFF 2009), The Stool Pigeon (SFIFF 2011) and Unbeatable (2013).
