The Sacrament
Description
A chilling examination of religious fanaticism and a gripping update of the Jim Jones story, Ti West’s new film tells the story of a three-person camera crew reporting on a commune operating in a remote location outside the United States. The trio’s entrée into the Eden Parish community is Caroline (Amy Seimetz), a former alcoholic whose brother Patrick (Kentucker Audley) has brought his colleagues from Vice magazine along to document the group and its leader, known only as Father (Gene Jones). Filming everything in sight, the reporters set about interviewing various members and find themselves impressed by the utopian set up and general contentment of the residents. When they get permission for an interview with Father, they find him smart and funny with undeniable Southern charm. Nevertheless, some cracks begin to show, and The Sacrament uses all of the techniques at its disposal to increase the tension as the fissures widen. Riffing on the current popularity of found-footage flicks, West takes it to the extreme as the guys from Vice, including the increasingly nervous camera operator Jake (Joe Swanberg), document every moment of their experience as they uncover the devastating secrets of Eden Parish. Evocative, suspenseful and unnervingly well-acted, The Sacrament is certain to interest fans of West’s earlier work while gaining him some brand new devotees. –Rod Armstrong
