Description

In 1945, filmmaker Mila Turajlić’s (Cinema Komunisto, Festival 2011) family apartment was divided and redistributed by the state government. Her mother’s political activism meant that they were spied on from the very rooms they used to own. Now her fascinating mother, Srbijanka, can talk about that “other side.” A staunch public advocate and voice of resistance against Slobodan Milosevic for years, she discusses with her daughter their complicated personal and political histories, while reflecting on the divided past they share. Winner of Best Documentary Feature at IDFA.

“The apartment’s history gives Srbijanka’s daughter Mila Turajlic a frame on which to hang her story of Yugoslavia and Serbia over the last century, yet her tireless mother is the film’s real, thought-provoking star as she casually details her part in the eventual overthrow of the monstrous Slobodan Milosovic and her thoughts in the wake of his departure.” – Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily

Director Mila Turajlić

Mila Turajlić previously made Cinema Komunisto (Festival 2011). She is a founding member of Serbia’s association of documentary filmmakers, DOKSerbia, and she also produces Belgrade’s Magnificent 7 Festival of European Feature Documentary Film. “I wanted to use this very peculiar space as a microcosm for telling a wider story, because I felt that this story had never been told in the way I had lived it,” she says of her inspiration for The Other Side of Everything. “Everything I’ve ever seen about the breakup of Yugoslavia, the ’90s in Serbia, and what was happening in Serbia during all this time, never corresponded to what I had lived.” (Seventh Row
