Description

Mystery and mishaps abound in this Fargo-esque comedy from Daniel Scheinert—one part of the team behind the cult-hit, Swiss Army Man (2016). Dick is dead and his bandmates, Zeke and Earl, are fumbling to cover up what really happened to their friend on the night of the strange incident that led to his passing. With possibly the best—and only?—use of a Nickelback soundtrack, The Death of Dick Long gets weird in small-town Alabama, where news travels fast and no one is an expert at keeping secrets.

“[T]he film’s biggest laughs come from its keen details about life in Alabama, exaggerated yet so dead perfect. The sound of Earl’s vape, the plodding way the band struggles through Staind’s “It’s Been a While,” watching an old lady in a muumuu mow a steep part of her lawn by feeding and pulling the mower with a rope. The film’s general feel is a stew of Jody Hill’s comic broadness, David Gordon Green’s affection, and the criminal idiocy favored by the Coen brothers.”– Evan Saathoff, Birth.Movies.Death.

Director Daniel Scheinert

Daniel Scheinert initially rose to prominence when he teamed with Daniel Kwan. Known as the Daniels, they collaborated on short films and music videos, including DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s Turn Down for What (2014), winner of Best Music Video at Camerimage and nominated for a Best Music Video Grammy. The Daniels made their feature debut with Swiss Army Man (2014), winning the Dramatic Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival and the Best Feature-Length Film Award at Sitges-Catalonian International Film Festival. The Death of Dick Long is Scheinert’s solo feature directing debut.
