Sundown Cinema Outdoor Screening: The Fog
Description
As a seaside Northern California town prepares to celebrate its centennial, a mysterious marine layer slowly envelops it as night falls in John Carpenter’s eerie horror classic. According to local legend, a shipwreck 100 years ago in the waters just off the shore of Antonio Bay claimed the lives of the Elizabeth Dane’s entire crew. Now, as paranormal occurrences and ghastly slayings ensue, the townspeople must unravel their home’s troubled past before the true manifestation of malevolence emerges from the fog. At its 45th anniversary, Carpenter’s mist-shrouded chiller—shot in Point Reyes and Bodega Bay—continues to induce goosebumps. This second collaboration with his Halloween “scream queen” Jamie Lee Curtis also stars Curtis’ mother Janet Leigh and Carpenter’s then wife Adrienne Barbeau. Containing an entrancing synth score by Carpenter himself, The Fog’s still potent ability to set pulses racing demonstrates why it remains a cult favorite among his outstanding oeuvre of spine-tingling thrillers. This is a free outdoor screening, presented in conjunction with the San Francisco Parks Alliance. RSVP required. —Jordan Klein
