Sharp Corner
Description
Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders shine in Jason Buxton’s (Blackbird) taut psychological thriller about a young family whose benign move to the suburbs leads to unthinkable consequences. Josh (Foster) and Rachel (Smulders) are enjoying the first evening in their new home when a car crashes through their yard and living room. The brutality of the shocking incident only deepens after the Josh and Rachel discover it is not an isolated event but due to the flawed design of the road in front of their house. As Rachel tries to move forward, Josh becomes fixated on preventing another accident. Buxton’s knack for building tension and deploying ambiguity to keep the audience guessing is magnificently deployed, while Foster’s idiosyncratic performance is carefully calibrated to evoke understanding, possibly empathy, for a man of questionable behavior. As Josh descends deeper into a state of irrationality —a clever critique of masculinity and paranoia—questions arise about his true nature and intent. —Jessie Fairbanks
