Description
Manana, a wild-haired 50-something mother of three, has just written a book. The problem is that the novel is clearly autobiographical and leaves no family member unscathed. As the ramifications of her artistic endeavor unravel in compellingly bizarre fashion, Manana’s single-minded pursuit of her new calling leads the film into brave and uncharted territory. The daughter of acclaimed director Zaza Urushadze (Tangerines, Festival 2014), Ana Urushadze attended Georgia’s Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film University. Scary Mother, Ana Urushadze’s feature debut, was Georgia’s 2018 Best Foreign Language Oscar entry. The film’s many festival prizes include Best First Feature and Youth Jury Award at Locarno, Best Director at Gijón, Cineuropa Award and Heart of Sarajevo at Sarajevo, and the Grand Jury Prize at Asia Pacific Screen Awards. “When I started out I was going to write (Scary Mother) with a male protagonist, it would have been a husband leaving his family to write a book. Then it become more interesting and intense and significant for me to have it be about a woman, and at that point it also became more serious and more about female empowerment.” (Cineuropa)
