Description

One could paint a mansion with the amount of blood that gushes out of Coralie Fargeat’s almost unbearably visceral film detailing the baroque vengeance unleashed by a young woman who is assaulted and left for dead in the desert. While Revenge is inspired by and pays tribute to grindhouse classics with its visuals and relentless score, Fargeat also subversively offers a beyond-extreme representation of female rebirth, creating a new kind of female superhero along the way.

“Shot with muscular agility, sizzling colors, and lots of virtuoso tracking sequences, and fueled by a ballsy techno score in the John Carpenter/Dario Argento tradition, Revenge is nothing if not relentless. Those who go with its splashy, Grand Guignol theater of death will have a vicious good time. Will it stoke the usual arguments about graphic violence in response to rape being just another form of exploitation? Sure. But having a woman at the helm for once also gives a certain license for excess, and Fargeat and her game actors run with it.” – David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

“Coralie Fargeat’s feature directorial debut isn’t only an astonishing, subversive take on tired clichés; it’s also a confidently crafted tale of female survival and rebirth, featuring a fierce performance from Matilda Lutz, and the kind of gorgeous sun-soaked cinematography that would make George Miller swoon. Just when you thought rape-revenge movies had nothing left to say (if they even had anything to say in the first place), along comes Revenge — which transcends mere cleverness with a thoughtful, challenging approach to a worn-out concept.” – Britt Hayes, Screen Crush

Director Coralie Fargeat

Coralie Fargeat studied screenwriting at La fémis in Paris. Before making Revenge, she directed two award-winning shorts, Le Télégramme (2003) and Reality+ (2014). “I’m a real violent genre movie fan myself. I grew up with them, and for me, they provide a very creative space where I can express myself as a director and a filmmaker. So I really wanted for my first feature to go in that direction, and to be very free to put my vision and my voice in it. And the idea was to embrace all the tropes, all the expectations of the genre and turn it my way,” Fargeat says of Revenge. (Daily Dead.com)
