Description

Employing striking (and super gory) imagery, an unsettling soundtrack, and an anarchic sense of humor, Ravenous puts a new twist on the zombie apocalypse, when a group of eccentric rural-dwelling Quebecois prove more than up to the challenge posed by hordes of malign flesh-eaters. Director Robin Aubert brings an auteur vision to a genre in need of innovation.

“What makes Ravenous so unique, arresting, and ultimately quite moving is the allusive and elliptical style of Aubert’s storytelling, and his ability to smoothly maneuver through tonal shifts from pensive and regretful to horrific and hyperventilating. His is a film that suggests Night of the Living Dead as reimagined by Michelangelo Antonioni, with elements of Zombieland (including a clever variation of that dark comedy’s funniest gag) and Bresson’s L’Argent tossed in for good measure. Stretches of intense human interaction are interspersed with moments of low-key humor that are gentle, even sweet, and dramatically potent zombie assaults that are all the more jolting for their contrapuntal chaos and abruptness.” – Joe Leydon, Variety

Director Robin Aubert

“I’d been wanting to do a zombie film for so long and for me, it was an opportunity to talk about humanity and to have some character who talks about life because there is a crisis,” Quebecois writer and director Robin Aubert told Variety about Ravenous, a film shot in the woods behind his house. After making his debut in 2000 with Lila, a short, Aubert went on to win Best Director at 2006 Fantasporto for his first feature, Saint Martyrs of the Damned. Ravenous captured Best Canadian Feature Film honors at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Temps Ø People’s Choice Award at the Montreal Festival of New Cinema.
