Witty and spry from start to finish, Stillman’s adaptation—set in the 1790s—feels remarkably contemporary in its class analysis and use of humor. Eimer ni Mhaoldomhnaigh’s costume designs, the period detail in Anna Rackard’s production design, and strong supporting turns from Chloë Sevigny and Tom Bennett add to the rich tableau. Whit Stillman made his feature writing/directing debut with Metropolitan (1990), garnering multiple honors, including a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award nomination and an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. He went on to make Barcelona (1994), The Last Days of Disco (1998) and Damsels in Distress (2011).
