Little Accidents
Description
In a West Virginia coal-mining town, the unthinkable has happened: Ten men have lost their lives in a mining accident, leaving the small community in shambles as it tries to make sense of the tragedy and lay blame where it can. Amos, the only survivor, is forced to readjust to life with crippling disabilities and faces pressure to participate in a class-action lawsuit against the mining concern; company executive Bill is under internal investigation for cutting corners; and as friends and family act out in reaction to the catastrophe, things unravel further. Featuring atmospheric, low-light cinematography and subtly affecting performances from Elizabeth Banks and rising stars Boyd Holbrook (Out of the Furnace) and Jacob Lofland (Mud), first-time feature filmmaker Sara Colangelo’s Little Accidents weaves an everything-is-connected narrative about bonds forged from indescribable loss, one that highlights the similarities between the haves and have-nots far more than it does the differences. It’s a rich, contemplative tale about how “accidents” can sometimes be a product of selfish human desire, and how fluid loyalties can be in their aftermath. –Michelle Devereaux
