Description

Werner Herzog continues to engage his fascination with the power of nature—in this case in the form of volcanoes—in this wide-ranging documentary. Returning to what may prove to be his ideal topic, Herzog and his codirector, volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer, explore both the science and mythologies behind surrounding the explosive formations. Herzog and Oppenheimer, who met during the production of Encounters at the End of the World, have a charming, mutually enthusiastic rapport. In travels from the South Pacific Ocean nation of Vanuatu to Ethiopia and North Korea, Oppenheimer’s affable on-camera interviews draw out the cultural belief systems that surround these mighty forces, while Herzog turns up his signature charismatic characters, colorful stories, and surprising situations. As Herzog characteristically allows his wide-ranging interests to detour into engaging eddies and crevices—from a church shaped like a chicken to the North Korean subway system—the volcanoes themselves remain center screen, mesmerizing and spectacular.
