Description
The lives of a killer who hears voices and the doctor who treats him mingle compellingly in this clever psychological thriller starring two of the region’s hottest actors. Three years after brutally murdering his wife, Fan Kwok Sang is ready for release. “He is completely cured,” says his cocksure physician Dr. Chow, but subsequent crimes call this decision—and Dr. Chow’s own pronouncement—into question. Exemplifying the cinematic cross-pollination that has been happening since the Hong Kong turnover, the film memorably pairs HK superstar Lau Ching Wan as the desperate criminal with dapper, mainland-born Huang Xiaoming as the doctor who appears to have Fan’s best interests at heart. Building to an unrelenting face-off between doctor and patient in an enclosed room, Insanity blends social commentary about mental illness into a twist-filled plot that will have viewers on the edge of their seats. At the 2015 Hong Kong Film Awards, Lau was nominated for Best Actor while David Lee was nominated for Best New Director.
