Three-time Academy Award® nominee, BAFTA nominee, and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois is best known for writing, directing, and executive producing the commercially and critically acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon animated trilogy, which culminated in 2019 with the release of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. The films have collectively grossed $1.6 billion at the global box-office, garnered four Academy Award® nominations, and inspired a multiple Emmy-award winning TV series as well as multi-media immersive experiences.

This summer, DeBlois will bring the live-action adaptaion of How to Train Your Dragon to the big screen with Mason Thames and Nico Parker stepping in to the iconic roles of “Hiccup” and “Astrid,” with Gerard Butler reprising his role as “Stoick the Vast.”

Prior to collaborating on the original animated How to Train Your Dragon with Chris Sanders, the pair wrote and directed Walt Disney Animation Studios’ beloved Academy Award® nominated Lilo & Stitch (2002) after first serving as co-heads of story on Mulan (1998). DeBlois also served as executive producer on Chris Sanders’ “The Wild Robot,” which received three Academy Award® nominations and earned over 90 industry awards and accolades.

In addition, DeBlois has directed several music-themed films, including TÍU, a documentary about Of Monsters and Men, which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, and 2007’s indie critical darling Sigur Rós: Heima. His collaboration with Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi led to the singer-songwriter’s contributions to all three How to Train Your Dragon soundtracks.

Born and raised in Canada, DeBlois’s career began at Hinton Animation Studios in his hometown of Ottawa. In 1990, he joined the Don Bluth Studios in Ireland before heading to the US to begin work for Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1994. He subsequently joined DreamWorks Animation in 2008 before segueing to a first look deal at NBC Universal under his production banner, Anvil Pictures. He is a graduate of Sheridan College’s animation program and was awarded an honorary degree in 2016. DeBlois is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the Directors Guild of America, and the Writers Guild of America.
