Description

Challenging our ideas about narrative connections, H. envisions a world thrown out of balance by a possible astronomical event. When something falls from the sky and explodes over Troy, NY, there follows a rash of strange apparent effects. People are reported missing throughout the city. Weird weather is witnessed. And the fates of two women, unknown to one another and both named Helen, are entwined. The first Helen, in her 60s, sates her desire for motherhood by doting on an eerily lifelike “Reborn Doll,” a replica of an infant that requires regular attention, such as feedings and changings. The second Helen is a young, hip artist who makes work with her husband and is pregnant with their child. The astral event throws the couple’s lives into turmoil pushing them to confront the shaky foundations of their relationship and careers. All the while, it seems the destinies of these two Helens of Troy are merging, guided by mysterious agents. Co-directors Rania Attieh and Daniel Garcia (OK, Enough, Goodbye, SFIFF 2012) have crafted an elliptical, confounding and beautiful tale of cosmic forces run amok. Both a mind-bending puzzle and sensual experience, this atypical narrative continuously opens questions about the nature of its world. —Sean Uyehara
