Description

Attractive young Australian exchange student Naomi (Emily Browning) finds herself trapped in a windowless office in Brooklyn doing tedious archival work with middle-aged Nick (Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz) in Alex Ross Perry’s latest exploration of contemporary urban neurosis and longing. Naomi’s mere presence arouses a variety of difficult feelings in a quartet of characters in this sharp dram’a. Both Nick and friend of a friend, Buddy (Jason Schwartzman), find themselves attracted to her, and their wives are instantly suspicious. But the unfolding story is about much more than thwarted desire, as Perry emphasizes insights and possibilities over actual dramatic events. Therapist Alyssa (Chloë Sevigny), Nick’s wife, projects a neediness that belies her profession, while her unpleasant sister Gwendolyn (Mary-Louise Parker) spits venom, most often at her personal assistant Sam (Lily Rabe). Perry’s easy pace gives his complex characters generous space in which to develop. With superb acting in every role, sharp dialogue, and keen psychological insights, Golden Exits is a pleasure to watch. Perry’s observant eye relates the messiness of relationships, showing human emotion as it often really is—awkward, uncertain, uncomfortable, and not fully comprehended. —Gustavus Kundahl
