Description
At a defining moment in New Wave provocateur Jean-Luc Godard’s artistic life when the didactic La Chinoise (1967) marked a shift in style as radical as his politics, the 37-year-old filmmaker also fell in love with his 20-year-old leading lady Anne Wiazemsky. Louis Garrel inhabits the auteur’s pugnacious soul as he embraces the protests sweeping France and embarks on a tempestuous second marriage. Writer/director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist, 2011) pays homage to Godard’s genius even as he cheekily sends up the director’s excesses and pretensions.

After making two spy satires OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (2006) and OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009), Michel Hazanavicius scored the biggest hit of his career to date with his silent comedy The Artist (2011). Among the film’s many awards were Best Picture and Best Director Oscars and Best Film and Best Director César Awards. Of his inspiration for Godard, Mon Amour, he says, “Some people probably think me telling Godard’s story is blasphemy. My friends were worried. But he’s not my hero or my God. Godard is like the leader of a sect and I’m an agnostic.” (The Guardian)
