God Willing
Description
A young man’s religious awakening becomes the fulcrum for familial upheaval in Edoardo Falcone’s playful comedy-drama. When Andrea tells his parents he has something to tell them, they believe he’s going to come out as gay; instead, he confesses that he wants to be a priest, encouraged by a charismatic mentor named Pietro. Andrea’s father Tommaso, an arrogant, atheist surgeon, takes this announcement as far more worrisome than having a homosexual son and seeks to prove Pietro a charlatan. Meanwhile, other family members—a sister with a drinking problem, a mother who finds her life unfulfilled—discover themselves awakened by his revelation in different ways. With memorable performances by Alessandro Gassman as Pietro and Laura Morante as Andrea’s mom, God Willing also has a sly and serious subtext about how change can occur through personal introspection and a good shock to the system. The film won the 2015 David di Donatello award for Best New Director.
Speaking about his directorial debut God Willing, Edoardo Falcone says, “I wanted to make a film with a fun and irreverent presentation of the reality around us.” Citing masters from Italian comedy such as Mario Monicelli and Ettore Scola as points of reference, the germinating idea for the project centered around characters who consider themselves democratic and enlightened but are the exact opposite. Falcone was born in Rome.
