Description

Kayla (the extraordinary Elsie Fisher, who finished eighth grade one week before filming began) has just won the school award for Most Quiet, but actually has a lot to say. In fact, she has her own YouTube channel where she makes inspirational videos for teens about confidence and “being yourself.” From pool parties to games of Truth or Dare, Bo Burnham’s warm, funny, and riotously discomfiting film reminds everyone just how terribly awkward middle school is.

“Any adult will tell you that middle school is one of the most awful parts of adolescence. Faces explode with acne, hormones are raging, conversations are awkward, and everyone sucks. So comedian Bo Burnham decided to make his feature writing and directorial debut recounting just how awful that time in all of our lives was with a wonderful, lively movie called Eighth Grade, and just like that we have a fresh new voice on the page and behind the camera.” – Ethan Anderton, Slash Film

“You’re going to fall in love with Elsie Fisher. As the breakout star and big, beating heart of Bo Burnham’s feature directorial debut, Eighth Grade, Fisher is tasked with carrying an entire film—an achingly real, firmly modern coming-of-age tale—with honesty and vulnerability to spare.” – Kate Erbland, Indiewire

Director Bo Burnham

Bo Burnham debuted on YouTube at 16 in 2006 and exploded into stardom, his videos amassing over 214 million viewers as of December 2017. He is a comedian, singer-songwriter, poet, musician, rapper, actor, and filmmaker. In writing his debut feature, he needed only look at his own youth for inspiration. “A big motivation for writing this story was my own feeling of unease in living with and on the internet and I wanted to make a story that explored that confusion.” (Filmmaker Magazine)
