Centerpiece Film
Family tensions flare in this tenderly wrought film, as the filmmaker explores old family wounds between his homophobic aunt and drag queen uncle.
Description
When the beloved matriarch of a sprawling Southern clan passes away, her children show their true colors. A once close-knit family is torn apart as the filmmaker’s homophobic aunt attempts to cast aside her gay, drag-queen brother. In his debut feature, Bo McGuire details, deconstructs, and celebrates the colorful individuals in his Southern clan. With imagination, style, and panache, this film is a surprising and deeply moving family portrait.
Recommended for ages 14 and up.
Bo McGuire, who calls himself a “tale spinner,” was named one of Filmmaker magazine’s 2019 “25 New Faces of Independent Film. Spike Lee selected McGuire’s television pilot, Shitbird, as the recipient of New York University’s Sandra Ifraimova Award and his screenplay, Alabama Snipe Fight, appeared on NYU’s Purple List of screenplays penned by university grad students and recent alumnae. Among his work is the short Uncle John and the Cotton Headed Water Rattlers (2017). Socks on Fire, McGuire’s first feature, won the Hot Docs Pitch Forum’s Cuban Hat Award for best pitch.
Rock M. Sakura is a beloved fanfavorite from RuPauls Drag Race Season 12, and is the current reigning Miss Jpop SF. Sakura is usually found death dropping, hot-glueing, wearing short shorts, doing drop splits, working out her back rolls and scratching her head in confusion when she can’t thread her sewing machine. She is heavily influenced by Manga and anime, which shows in her cartoonish louder than life make-up style. A beautiful mix of fierce, camp, and kawaii, this is a high energy queen you won’t want to miss!
FREDDIE is a genre and gender-fluid singer, producer and performer based in Oakland, California. Their debut EP, MELANIN MONROE, has been streamed over half a million times since its release at the start of the pandemic and has been featured by Billboard, Grindr, THEM. and the Bay Bridged. You can find them on all socials @EASTBAYVICIOUS.
