Tribute Conversation: Jenny Slate
Screening: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
Join us for a very special onstage tribute and conversation with actor Jenny Slate, in which she will go in-depth on her work and career.
The conversation will be followed by a screening of Slate’s upcoming film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp.
Jenny Slate is expected to attend.
PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
Paul Haigney & Elizabeth McGuire
Poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, this feature expansion of the beloved web series features the titular mollusk (voiced by Jenny Slate) looking after his Nana Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and ruminating on his home life and missing family. Filmed by a mostly off-camera director (the film’s real-life director Dean Fleischer-Camp), Marcel discusses his garden, musical tastes, and various hobbies, and both are shocked when the resulting videos go viral online. When Lesley Stahl from 60 Minutes wants to do a story on Marcel, our young hero worries to his Nana, “What if everything changes?” A comic delight from start to finish, the film also tweaks foibles of modern life from livestreaming to tattoo parlors.
Recommended for ages 9 and up.
An actor, voice performer, and comedian, Jenny Slate spent a season on Saturday Night Live (2009-2010) before achieving viral success with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2010), the first of three animated shorts. Over the last dozen years, Slate has successfully juggled roles in big-screen features, such as Obvious Child (Festival 2014), for which she received a Film Independent Spirit Award nomination; Landline (Festival 2017); and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) with parts in series like Parks and Recreation and The Great North and voice work in Big Mouth and Bob’s Burgers. Join us for a conversation with Jenny Slate and a screening of the big-screen feature of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2022).
After making his writing-directing debut with the short Science Fair (Or: Migratory Patterns & the Flight of the March Brown Mayfly) (2009), Dean Fleischer-Camp struck viral gold with his second short, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2010), winner of an AFI award for Best Short Film. A sensation on YouTube, it spawned two sequels, two books, and now Fleischer-Camp’s first narrative feature. In addition to helming shorts and TV projects, he also made a feature documentary, Fraud (2016), winner of the Depth of Field competition at the DocAviv Film Festival.
