Stewart Brand, the visionary founder of Whole Earth Catalog, and guru to Steve Jobs and other tech wizards, is profiled in this fascinating documentary. Beginning with his early years in Northern California, he graduates from Stanford, and soon meets Ken Kesey and his “Merry Pranksters.” Brand becomes a prominent figure of the hippie lifestyle emerging in the Bay Area and founds the Catalog in 1968, later described by Steve Jobs as “Google in paperback form.” Now in his eighties, Brand continues to influence culture by forming The Long Now Foundation, dedicated to building a 10,000-year clock and interested in the way biotechnology can be used to bring back extinct species and assist wildlife conservation. Through unfettered access, memorable archival footage, and candid interviews (Brian Eno, Peter Coyote), the film charts Brand’s dramatic course from counterculture to cyberculture icon in compelling fashion.
David Alvarado received his BA in Radio, Television, and Film from the University of North Texas and his MFA in Documentary Film and Video Production from Stanford University. He is also a 2010 recipient of a San Francisco Film Society Education Grant. With Jason Sussberg, he founded Structure Films, a home for their films about science, health, information, and technology, and made The Immortalists (2014), Bill Nye: Science Guy (Festival 2017), and the series Coded (2017).
Jason Sussberg has a BA in Film and Digital Media from UC Santa Cruz and an MFA in Documentary Film and Video Production from Stanford University. Before he turned to documentary filmmaking, Sussberg worked in television for the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco Giants. In addition to his filmmaking collaborations with David Alvarado on The Immortalists (2014), Bill Nye: Science Guy (Festival 2017), and the series Coded (2017), Sussberg has also amassed credits as a cinematographer and an editor.
