Essential SF
Every year since 2010, SFFILM has been honoring the people and institutions who make our Bay Area film culture unique. Essential SF is a celebration of the collective work it takes to make film vital, accessible, and fascinating here at home and across the globe. From animators to critics to theater owners to print traffic managers and everyone in between, the collection of Essential SF honorees commemorates where film culture has been, and where it’s going next.

Erin Lim and Angela Tabora’s Award-winning podcast highlights BIPOC women in media, film, and the arts. The show features thoughtful and fun interviews from marginalized and indie voices working as performers, comedians, independent filmmakers, and activists.

Stephen Gong
FORMER CAAM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Stephen served as the Center for Asian American Media’s (CAAM) Executive Director from 2006 to 2025. CAAM is a public media and cultural non-profit organization located in San Francisco. His previous positions in arts administration include leadership roles at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the National Endowment for the Arts, and many others.

Rachel Rosen
FILM PROGRAMMER
Independent film programmer and consultant based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is currently the West Coast Delegate and a selection committee member for the New York Film Festival and consults locally on awards strategy for clients including Netflix, Focus Features, and Warner Bros. Rachel was the Director of Programming at SFFILM from 2009 to 2020.

Tonko House
ANIMATION STUDIO
Former Pixar art directors Daisuke “Dice” Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo left Pixar in 2014 to co-found Tonko House Inc, the San Francisco Bay Area-based animation studio responsible for The Dam Keeper (2014), Moom (2016), and most recently ONI: Thunder God’s Tale (2022).

Laura Wagner
FILM PRODUCER
Award-winning producer who began her career in New York theater and transitioned into filmmaking when she discovered her passion for making thought-provoking, character-driven films across genres. Among her current projects are three San Francisco Bay Area-based feature films including By the Roots, The Yogi Trademark, and an upcoming documentary about plastics and human health.
