Description

Upscale Oakland couple Sara and Billy’s decision to hire a surrogate to birth their second child creates ripples in their marriage and in the relationships around them. In particular, Billy’s best friend Margaret (Erin Daniels, The L Word) is bemused by his preoccupation with fatherhood and wonders about her own aversion to being a mom. She and her partner Jen (a mother herself) are thrown for a further loop when Sara and Billy ask them to serve as godparents. Amy Glazer’s smart dramedy, adapted from Patricia Cotter’s play The Surrogate, blends laughs with sharp observations on just what constitutes a family, the politics of procreation, and the way life’s milestones impact marriages and friendships. Wendie Malick (Hot in Cleveland) is a standout as the wry grandmother who questions the ethics of surrogacy.
